According to the Garden Route District Municipality's joint operations centre (JOC), as of Thursday morning, final mop-up operations were underway in the Buffelsnek and Kransbos areas.
Shortly after the tragic events near George, other Garden Route fires were reported as far east as Stormsriver, with a particularly menacing blaze gutting the vast pine plantations of Buffelsnek, about 50 kilometres inland from Knysna.
Residents from Jonkersberg, Bosdorp, Sonskyn Vallei, Rheenendal, Buffelsnek and Protea Valley bosdorp in the Goudveld were evacuated as a precaution.
Many lines have effectively been contained‚ but the long distances and accessibility of lines do make mopping up slow and difficult in certain places.” Firefighting efforts on Tuesday would be concentrated on Jonkersberg‚ De Vlugt and Buffelsnek.
Fires in Buffelsnek and De Vlugt, areas which are carpeted by vast pine plantations, have decimated the landscape.
Forty people from Buffelsnek were currently being housed at the Wittedrift school, according to Working on Fire (WOF).
"Those who have been evacuated are from towns in the Goudveld area as well as from Jonkersberg, and Buffelsnek."
The evacuations took place in Jonkersberg, Bosdorp, Sonskyn Vallei village, Rheenendal, Buffelsnek and Protea Valley bosdorp in the Goudveld.
On Wednesday evening, teams worked to protect Dubell sawmill as well as 50 homes in the small farming community in Buffelsnek.
